Heading out for a nine day trip into the bush to live near, learn about, and volunteer for the Maasai. We drove to the city of Arusha which is an hour or so from our village. We switched into a Land Rover packed with supplies and water and began the drive. An hour and a half outside of Arusha already seemingly miles from anywhere we turned off the main road and head straight into no man's land.

We drove and drove and drove... three hours into the bush. The only people living out here are the real, true Maasai. Some of the younger boys herding their cattle either stood in amazement as we drove by or ran for their lives... This was my first experience on the trip where for sure a number of the youth we met (because of how far out they lived had probably never left their village and therefore) had never seen a white person before. We were warmly welcomed everywhere but some of the children hid behind their mothers and were afraid to look at us or shake our hands. One poor little boy herding his cattle returned our wave with a tentative one... moments later our guide realized he wanted to drive another direction and as he slowed to turn the vehicle around the boy shouted to his friend and they ran terrified as fast as their legs could carry them, leaving their cattle to fend for themselves. I felt terrible.

Home Sweet Home. That's right bucket showers, digging a hole for you know what, and wild animals...

The first morning two giraffes walked right through our camp, we also saw zebras, ostriches, impalas, and gazelles hanging in our "backyard" on different days of our stay here.

Beautiful sunsets and campfires every morning and night. Our stay here timed with the full moon and the stars were amazing.
